How this is calculated
- Billable hours = techs × paid hours × billable efficiency
- Labor cost per billable hour = wage × (1 + burden) ÷ efficiency. You pay for every hour, but only bill some of them, so each billable hour carries the unbilled ones.
- Overhead per billable hour = annual overhead ÷ billable hours
- Break-even rate = labor cost + overhead per billable hour
- Recommended rate = break-even ÷ (1 − target profit). A 20% profit means dividing by 0.80, which is a 25% markup on cost. Adding 20% to cost only gives you a 16.7% margin.
